The Camino de Santiago: A Journey of Discovery
The Camino de Santiago, or Way of St. James, is one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in the world, attracting adventurers, spiritual seekers, and those looking for a unique experience. Spanning multiple routes across Europe, all paths lead to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of Saint James are said to be buried.
A Historical Pilgrimage
Dating back over a thousand years, the Camino was originally a Catholic pilgrimage. Today, people walk it for many reasons—spiritual, personal growth, or simply to enjoy the beauty of Spain’s diverse landscapes. The Camino Francés, starting in France, is the most popular route, but there are many others, including the Camino Portugués and the coastal Camino del Norte.
The Camino Experience
The Camino is about embracing simplicity. Pilgrims carry only what they need, staying in modest hostels (albergues) and sharing meals with fellow walkers. The path is challenging, but it offers ample time for reflection and connecting with both nature and people. Walking for hours each day brings clarity, and the warmth of local hospitality and fellow pilgrims creates a strong sense of community.
Why Walk the Camino?
For many, the Camino is a time to disconnect from everyday life, reflect on personal goals, or seek spiritual renewal. The journey is about more than the destination; it’s an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and experience something transformative.
My Journey: Sarria to Santiago
I began my Camino Frances and walked to Santiago de Compostela and then walked further along to Finnisterre and onto Muxia – a fishing village known as the “End of the World’!
Over the days, I walked through lush Galician landscapes, was met with lots of rain, mist, mud! And met wonderful people along the way. Each village had its own charm, and the anticipation grew as I neared Santiago. The sense of achievement upon reaching the cathedral was overwhelming—an experience that will stay with me forever.
